Artistry Of Rick Nolan

Long ago I first felt an inspiration in listening to Dan's gift of melodic stories.  I took a bit of time in deciding to do this, it's not like anyone knows just how many people see these contributions.  I felt I'd attempt to do my part, put something down that directly came from inspiration of Dan.

A Cry In The Forest, one of the songs on Greetings From The West CD made me think back on times when I felt closest to nature, and this is one of those experiences put to words, simplistic in chord structure, finger-picking, and drop D tuning. Chords are simplistic, D, C, G, and slow.

Since this was written yesterday, not much about the song will remain exactly as I send it.

The song is entitled this morning, "Mankind's Cry"

Mankind's Cry

Sitting up at the cross,
Watching a bird in flight,
It’s soaring ever higher,
In the warm sunlight.

Seeing its wonder,
Aware of its pride,
Able to touch man,
With its beauty
And flight.

Like California’s Condor,
Like Spotted Owls,
How many others,
Are endangered now.

I listen for outrage,
For mankind's cry,
All I hear is silence,
And I wonder why.

If we were broken,
Flat on the street,
Mankind could never,
Ignore that sad scene.

Like California’s Condor,
Like the Spotted Owl,
Is what I see,
Endangered now?

I listen for outrage,
For mankind's cry,
All I hear is silence,
And in line they die.

(Repeat 1rst & 3rd verse, & Chorus x2)

I listen for outrage,
For Mankind’s Cry,
All I hear is silence,
And in line they die. (1rst)
               We must wonder why. (2nd)

Click Here To Hear Him Sing Sailing Blind

This is another song that I'm personally proud of.  I'm sure there are better songs out there, but this song was another inspiration from Dan.  "The Leader of the Band" inspired me personally for many years because of the many different great musicians that I'm lucky enough to call blood relatives.  I decided to write a song that would in some way be for all those family members that have seen my music grow throughout the years, as well as those family members that aren't even around yet.  (You know sort of a generational song for those in the family long after I'm not here.)  I wrote the song on Leap Day 2000 in order to keep the song younger than it actually will be.  It's entitled, "Sailing Blind" and is written as a small yet understanding point of hope for those willing to listen.

This song will be given to each of my current family members (Grandparents,
to 2nd cousins, and everyone in between).  Hopefully they will enjoy the
effort I gave and for sharing my honest belief that love can last, and that
nothing worthwhile is guaranteed to be easy.

Sailing Blind

There are times, when your eyes sail the waves,
When tears like oceans, are cast in the way.
Where's love, when you need its hand.
Out of the maze of confusion,
Away from the illusions,
It can't last.

Hearts fall, (by the way) all the time,
Some aren't there yet,
And seem to be sailing blind.

Here's the answer, the one love needs.
Take it to heart, it can succeed.
If you won't, you won't deny,
A love without knowing,
A love without showing,
Each other why.

Hearts fall, (by the way) all the time,
Some aren't there yet,
And seem to be sailing blind.

There are times, when your eyes sail the waves,
When tears like oceans, are cast in the way.
Remember love, when you need its hand.
Out of the maze of confusion,
Away from the illusions,
A love can't last.

The Dreams

Well here comes the darkness, here comes the danger, here comes love girl.
Here comes all, that I know you’ve, learned to fear.
All the old loves rest entombed, in a maze of your memories,
Crowned by heartaches you have faced, while in love.

You must know, that this isn't all one-sided.
That two, as easy as one, can share the blame.
It’s not like you don't try hard, to survive a love.
Yet all the efforts, just can't seem to scale the dreams.

You must know, that this isn't all one-sided.
That two, as easy as one, can share the blame.
It’s not like you don’t try hard, to survive a love.
Yet all the efforts, just can’t seem to scale the dreams.

(Repeat 1rst verse ending with this line below)

Will the efforts, he attempts scale your dreams?

The Storm (Original)

Well outta the blue skies,
Outta pure blind neglect,
Something is rising,
But it isn't here yet.

There's some that'll tell you,
It's never too late,
While filling their tanks.
And that's a shame.

Welcome to the storm,
Long, hot, and mean,
One of destruction,
The worst we've seen.

Will you beg forgiveness,
For ignoring Earth's needs,
Talk to your God,
Beg on your knees.

Should he forgive us,
For the mistakes we made?
Putting our checkbooks,
Ahead of Earth's fate.

Welcome to the storm,
Long, hot, and mean,
One of destruction,
The worst we've seen.

Ice Caps are melting,
The water will warm,
No more sushi bars,
Yuppies be warned.

Welcome to the storm,
Long, hot and mean.
One of utter destruction,
Destruction, we've never seen.
